Praise for "Pennygirl

Pennygirl’s Rescue by Judy McGee is a tender and important story that captures the emotional journey of a puppy in search of belonging. While on the surface this is a heartfelt tale about a dog finding her forever home, beneath it lies a powerful exploration of themes deeply relevant to young children feelings of being left out, scared, uncertain, and ultimately, the joy of connection, love, and stability.
This book resonates especially well with students in Grade One, where the Social Studies curriculum encourages children to explore the concept of roles and responsibilities in their community. Pennygirl’s journey introduces an opportunity to discuss community helpers, such as animal shelter workers, foster families, and veterinarians. It opens the door to talk about who helps those (both animals and people) who are in need of care, support, and love and how children themselves can play a role in helping others feel welcome, safe, and included.
From a Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) perspective, Pennygirl’s Rescue aligns beautifully with the expectations outlined in the Ontario Health and Physical Education Curriculum (2023), particularly the SEL goals of identifying and managing emotions, building empathy, and recognizing the importance of positive relationships. As students follow Pennygirl’s journey from fear and loneliness to trust and joy, they naturally begin to understand and name emotions like sadness, hope, fear, and happiness. The story can lead to thoughtful conversations about what it feels like to be left out, what it means to feel safe, and how kindness can change someone's world.
In my classroom, this story sparked rich dialogue. Students connected with Pennygirl’s feelings and shared times when they themselves felt uncertain or alone and what helped them feel better. It gave them vocabulary to describe their own emotions and the awareness to see those feelings in others.
